Day Camp

How camps in the United States work

Most camps listed here are day camps, with a smaller number of trials or identification camps and only a handful of residential programmes. That split tells you most of what you need to know: the American game is built around short, local, non-selective camps, with a separate and quite different route for players chasing a college place.

Day camps are the default. They run roughly 9am to midday, last between one and five days, and are timed to school breaks — summer, fall break, Thanksgiving week, winter break and February break. Most take children from about four to fourteen, and almost none of them select: you register and you attend. Two kinds of organisation run them. MLS clubs put their own name and academy coaches to camps at their training grounds or satellite venues — D.C. United at RFK Stadium, the New York Red Bulls at their Whippany training facility, LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park, Nashville SC, Minnesota United. Alongside them sit commercial operators and local clubs — Challenger Sports, Nike, First Touch, Euro Soccer, Strive — usually working with a city parks department or an AYSO region, at a school or public park.

College ID camps, and why they are different

College identification camps are the American thing with no real equivalent elsewhere, and they are what the trials category here mostly means. They are one-day events hosted on a university campus and run by that university's own coaching staff — Widener, Oglethorpe and the University of Tulsa appear in these listings — for high-school-age players who want to be recruited. You train and play 11v11 in front of the people who actually decide, which is why they are worth travelling for and why they fill quickly.

Separately, showcase operators such as ID Sports USA run scouting events in front of several college and semi-professional scouts at once. These cast a wider net than a single university's camp, but you are one of a much larger field.

Residential camps

Residential camps are rare in the United States and aimed higher. IMG Academy in Florida, Barça Residency Academy in Arizona and LaLiga's camp at Vermont Academy take players from about ten to eighteen for a week, and the offer is living the full-time academy routine rather than attending sessions. Expect a higher age floor and a considerably higher price than a day camp.

Practical notes

Half-day is the norm for day camps, so have a plan for the afternoon. Almost every day camp takes both boys and girls; residential and identification camps are more often split by gender.

Goalkeepers should look for the specialist clinics rather than assuming a general camp will cover them — keepers rarely get dedicated work at a mixed outfield camp.
