Chinese U12s Stun Everton Academy in Italy β Then 14-Year-Old Earns La Masia Spot
3 July 2026
A historic week for Chinese youth football: a grassroots U12 side conquered Europe, and a teenage prodigy landed a place at the world's most famous academy.
In a week that captured imaginations across the global youth football community, Chinese grassroots football made headlines for the very best reasons. A U12 team known as the Chinese Football Boys travelled to Italy for the prestigious Sigismondi International Youth Tournament, a competition featuring 48 sides from elite European clubs, and returned home as champions after defeating Everton's academy team in the final.
It was the first time in the tournament's history that an Asian side had ever lifted the trophy, a result that sent ripples through the youth football world. This was no lucky run: the team navigated a full group stage and a tough knockout draw against opponents from some of Europe's most celebrated club academies before claiming the title.
Almost simultaneously, 14-year-old Li Haoyan earned a place in FC Barcelona's legendary La Masia academy. La Masia has shaped some of the greatest footballers ever to play the game, Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta among them, making a place there one of the most coveted prizes in world youth football.
Together these stories challenge the assumption that elite young talent is concentrated only in Europe and South America. For aspiring players everywhere, whether on a grassroots pitch in England, a training field in the US, or a community park in China, this week proved that the right dedication and development environment can open any door in the world game.
