England FA Launches FutureFit: A Research-Backed Overhaul of Grassroots Youth Football

6 July 2026

The FA is changing how the youngest players in England experience football β€” and the reforms, driven by university research into 400-plus matches, could reshape how a generation learns the game.

Starting from the 2026-27 season, The Football Association is introducing a sweeping set of changes to grassroots youth football in England under a new initiative called FutureFit. The headline change is a new 3v3 format for U7 players β€” designed to give the very youngest footballers more touches of the ball, more involvement in the game, and a much better introduction to football than larger-sided formats allow. The changes were not made on guesswork. The FA partnered with Liverpool John Moores University and studied more than 400 grassroots matches at U6 to U14 level, examining how different playing formats affected the technical and physical development of young players. The findings drove every decision in the new framework. For children just starting out in the game, this is exciting news. Smaller-sided games mean more decision-making moments, more time on the ball, and more chances to express yourself. Research consistently shows this leads to better long-term development β€” more confident, more skilful players as they grow. For parents and coaches, the message from the FA is clear: the goal at the youngest ages is not winning matches. It is building a love for football and giving every child the right environment to develop at their own pace. If you are aged 6, 7, or 8 and just starting to play, the game is changing to be more fun for you. And for older players, these are the foundations that the best players in England will be built on in the years to come.
