England's FutureFit Revolution: More Ball Time, Smaller Teams, and a Focus on Fun

3 July 2026

Starting in 2026-27, England's grassroots football gets a complete overhaul backed by research from 40+ European nations, putting player enjoyment and skill at the heart of youth development.

England's Football Association has launched FutureFit, a sweeping new framework for grassroots youth football taking effect from the 2026-27 season. Built on evidence gathered from over 400 grassroots matches and comparisons with more than 40 European nations, these changes put young players first in every possible way. The headline change is 3v3 football for the youngest players at U7s level. Rather than navigating a large pitch with too many teammates, children at this age will play small-sided games that maximise how many times they touch the ball, how much they move, and crucially, how much fun they have. Research consistently shows that enjoyment at a young age is the biggest predictor of whether a child sticks with the game long-term. Beyond the youngest groups, the entire pathway shifts so players progress to larger formats one year later than before, with 11-a-side football moving from U13s to U14s. The rules are also age-adjusted to keep more ball in play, particularly for U7s through U9s. The FA partnered with Liverpool John Moores University to make sure every change is evidence-based rather than just traditional. For parents and coaches this is a signal to prioritise skill development and smiles over scorelines. For young players, it is a reminder that the way football is taught is evolving rapidly, and those who love the ball and embrace learning will always have the edge. Source: The FA
