English Referees Get New Power to Pause Grassroots Matches and Cool Tempers

The Football Association has confirmed that "cooling-off periods" are being rolled out across grassroots football in England for the new season, after a successful pilot. If a referee senses a match is becoming unsafe or behaviour is escalating, they can now pause play, send every player back to their own penalty area, and call the captains and coaches together in the centre circle to talk things through. Up to two cooling-off periods are allowed per match, and every use must be reported afterwards. For young players, this is a rule worth understanding rather than fearing. It exists to protect the game they love from being ruined by a handful of heated moments, and it puts real responsibility on captains - even eight and nine-year-old ones - to help manage their team's emotions under pressure. It is also a reminder that composure is a skill, just like passing or shooting. Players who can stay calm when a match gets tense, listen to their coach in a pause like this, and reset quickly are the ones who keep performing when it matters.
