Five-Second Countdowns and Quicker Subs: The New Rules Every Young Player Needs to Know This Season
29 August 2026
IFAB's updated Laws of the Game for 2026/27 bring stricter time-wasting punishments and faster substitutions, small tweaks that reward sharp, disciplined players.
A fresh set of Laws of the Game changes has kicked in for the 2026/27 season, and while most of the headlines focus on the professional game, the new rules will filter down to youth football fast. Referees will now count down five seconds for delayed throw-ins and goal kicks, if a team takes too long, the restart is reversed, handing the throw-in or a corner to the opponent. Substituted players also face a new ten-second limit to leave the pitch, or their replacement has to wait until the next stoppage after a full minute.
Injury treatment has changed too. Players receiving on-field assessment must now leave the pitch for at least one minute, doubling the previous 30-second minimum, a shift designed to discourage teams from using injuries to slow the game down. Equipment checks are getting smarter as well: referees are moving away from a blanket take-it-all-off approach to jewellery, instead asking whether an item is dangerous and safely covered.
For young players, these changes reward exactly the habits good coaches already preach: take restarts quickly, stay switched on after every stoppage, and never give the referee a reason to notice you for the wrong things. Coaches at grassroots and academy level can turn these rules into simple training games, timing throw-ins and goal kicks in practice so quick restarts become second nature well before a referee ever needs to count down.
