From Atalanta Academy to Chelsea's First Xabi Alonso Signing: Marco Palestra's Rapid Rise at 21
26 August 2026
Chelsea have paid up to £47m for 21-year-old Marco Palestra, fresh off being named Serie A Defender of the Season, in a deal that shows how quickly an academy graduate can become a first-choice signing for a new manager.
Chelsea have completed the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth up to £47m, making the 21-year-old right-back the first player brought in specifically by new head coach Xabi Alonso. Just one season after being loaned out to Cagliari, Palestra returned to Atalanta and was named Serie A's Defender of the Season before completing his move to the Premier League.
What should stand out to young players is the path Palestra took: an academy loan spell where he had to prove himself away from the spotlight, followed by a breakout campaign back at his parent club. It is a route many future professionals follow, and it shows that a loan move is not a step backward but often the exact experience a young player needs to force their way into a manager's plans.
Palestra's game is built on dribbling out from the back and covering ground as a wing-back, qualities that fit perfectly into Alonso's system. For young full-backs and wing-backs, his rise is proof that being comfortable on the ball and willing to sprint box-to-box can be just as valuable as pure defending.
Only two seasons ago, Palestra was fighting for playing time on loan. Today he is a seven-year Chelsea player. Patience, consistent effort in unglamorous loan spells, and a clear identity as a player can turn a promising academy talent into a marquee signing.
