Goalkeeper's Month-Long Van Trip Across Europe Ends With a Signing in Italy

When 18-year-old goalkeeper Milo Beimers left Northern Irish club Glentoran, where he'd played since he was 13, he had no club lined up - only a series of trials and a van. Beimers and his father set off on what became a roughly 2,000-mile journey across Europe, sleeping in the van as they chased opportunities in Spain, England and eventually Italy. After a trial with Hercules in Spain and a flying visit back to London that didn't lead anywhere, a call took Beimers to Italy, where after 30 days on the road he signed for Viterbese, a Serie D club - Italy's fourth tier - based near Rome. He made his debut days later, keeping a clean sheet in a 4-0 win. Beimers, a Canada youth international, says the experience taught him as much about resilience as goalkeeping. "There's been a lot of ups and a lot of downs, but in the end it's worked out and the risk has paid off," he said, describing weeks of uncertainty before the offer suddenly came together. For young players facing rejection or an unclear path forward, Beimers' story is a reminder that the traditional academy-to-first-team route isn't the only way in. Persistence, willingness to travel, and staying ready for a trial at short notice can open doors that waiting patiently at home cannot. He's already set his sights on helping Viterbese climb back up a division, and dreams of one day facing a big club in the Coppa Italia.
