Small-Sided Games, Big Results: How 3v3 Football Is Transforming Young Players
7 July 2026
Research from both sides of the Atlantic confirms that smaller game formats give young players dramatically more ball touches and development opportunities than traditional formats.
Grassroots football is undergoing a quiet revolution, and the evidence is backing it up. Research conducted across the USA and Europe has found that 2v2 and 3v3 game formats give young players significantly more touches on the ball, more 1v1 duels, and more chances to practise individual skills than larger formats like 5v5 or 7v7.
The logic is simple: fewer players on a smaller pitch means every child is involved in every moment of the game. Instead of standing on the wing waiting for the ball to arrive, young players are constantly making decisions, receiving passes, and taking on opponents. That repetition is invaluable for development.
US Soccer has been rolling out updates to its Game Format Project, with a renewed focus on age-appropriate formats to maximise enjoyment and learning. Coaches and parents across the country are being encouraged to embrace these smaller formats at the youngest age groups, trusting the process even if matches look a little different from the traditional game.
For any young player out there, the message is clear: every touch counts. Whether you are playing a pick-up game in the park, a training session at your local club, or a 3v3 tournament at the weekend, every moment with the ball is building the skills you will need at the next level. Keep the ball moving and keep learning.
